driving

today i went out to the library to look for something- on my way there i thought i saw dr. susano's son walking though town, that was a little weird. and then once i got to the library i parked next to a car that had an alaska plate, which i had also been behind when i picked britt up from school earlier today. Weird, again.
i passed this book shop that i have wanted to go into for some time now, but never do. it's called Pete's Book Shoppe, kind of reminds me of the travel book shoppe from Notting Hill, except for the blue door..and hugh grant...and the whole brittish thing...

i drove barefoot today, it's really great, you should try it. for some reason i feel like it's illegal in Ohio, so don't tell aaron baker it's the most emo thing to do, or he might wind up behind bars.

confessions

this one goes out to the roommate

Last Monday I found myself in a minivan riding out to Confluence, PA for my second evening of ballroom dancing. I have this habit of playing with thigs in cars. Well we were in a car that didn't belong to us, thus the basis of its appeal. I glanced over to the cup holder and it was filled with finger puppets! I felt that it was absouloutely necessary to wear them dancing. So I took a ghost, and put it on my pointer finger! Yes I'm 21 and I still play with toys worthy of being in McDonald's Happy Meals.

saturday morning breakfast

Saturday morning I ate my cereal out of a lovely ceramic bowl hand crafted by your studbucket and mine, Brian Whirledge.

graduation gift

my little brother is graduating from high school in about a month, i have been trying to think of something to give him that's special and meaningful. i was talking about it with my mom...

me: ok, i'll give him my car and i'll just take the underground to work everyday

mom: but meredith, that's in london

me: and the problem with that is.....?

momentos

i went to a coffee shop today, i was peering in the window before i went in, and i saw the exact same poster of kramer that was in our townhouse this year! i shook my head and then looked again, i walked in the door and sure enough it was....i knew it would be a good latte!

what a day...this is incredible!

Today my mom and I headed out to do some wedding gift shopping. We were headed to Target, and eventually got there....after a very interesting side trip!
a note about ME: when i am driving and i see something interesting, or intriguing once and a while i'll follow my interest and go on an exploration, an adventure one might say...well my mom is not so adventurous, hence a point of tension from time to time.
We were in Latrobe, PA headed for Greensburg, PA when I looked over into the rolling hills and spotted a beautiful red brick building i had never noticed before, we were at a stop light and i saw some signs that pointed in that direction that said "Latrobe Art Centre and Latrobe Brewing Company" figuring that building was probably an art centre i insisted we make the right turn, surprisingly mom my agrees, knowing that my "explorations" are always memorable (for good or bad, but definitely a memory!)We follow the windy road (as most are out here, woo hoo! take that indiana) and decide to head toward the building- we need to turn left onto a road called monastery Rd. and there was a sign on the left for the St. Vincent basilica. I put the pieces together and realized this building of wonder was no art centre, and mos def not a brewery!
We pulled in a parking place labeled "St. Vincent Seminary Visitors" that was us...apparently...my mom looked at me and said "ok miss meredith...now what do we do?" "go in and explore!"
We headed up the steps past a large statue of the founder of the seminary, his name was Boniface something....we walk into the basilica and in the very front i see a monk speaking to (my guess) a group of jr highers, suddenly the yellow school bus outside the Basilica makes sense. my mom and i caught the tail end of his lecture about the building and monastic life. after his lecture i had a few questions so i walk up to him, and first introduce myself and also felt the need to describe our random appearance and tag along on the field trip, he graciously answered my questions and talked with us (he looked like a combo of baxter orr and tim from oneonta, NY)he introduced himself as father brian, and invited us back at anytime, the basilica opens at 4am. we realized the seminary was actually part of a college called St. Vincent College, so we bummed around the campus, and then found an old mill that is still used today to break down grain to make bread and other flours and stuff. there was conveniently a coffee shop there too, which has wireless internet (i just found a sweet new hot spot!) they also had turkish coffee, but that was only available when the turkish barista was working...all of a sudden i felt an overwhelming sense of culture in southwest PA! I got some black indian tea, which was good, and we headed out of the monastery! We headed to target and did our thing, and had lunch at this cool harper's pointe-ish restaurant. i got a hamburger..i don't know what possessed me because that was probably like the 5th time i have had red meat in like a year, but it was the most exciting burger ever. it said it came with onions, smoked gouda and roasted red peppers. when i got the burger it only had onions, i inquired about my missing peppers and cheese, she informed me that they where in the burger. confused, i took a bite, and behold there was a secret filling in the burger!
on our way home i was still interested in the art center and the brewery, so we turn back onto the road that we took to get to the monastery and began another quest!
we drove by the art center..it didn't really blow our skirts up, to say the least, so we thought the brewery would be more exciting. we went in and and there was a small museum with the history of Rolling Rock Beer (which is brewed here in Latrobe, PA) but also in the museum were Latrobe's other claim to fames, and they are noteable:

*Arnold Palmer (a famous golfer)
*Fred McFeely Rogers (Mr. Rogers- a part of my childhood!)
*The banana Split! (..invented here apparently)
*The Benedictine monastery of St. Vincent...
There was a short movie detailing how to make beer, and unlike the ben and jerry's tour there were no free samples....drat. just kidding!

well after that crazy adventure i was pretty tuckered out, but when i came up the stairs to my bedroom i found the carpentry project i had left there last night...i have been working on a bookshelf so i put the hammer to the wood and finished up that sucker, so far so good, but there aren't any books on it yet..i too have a problem with where to put books when i come back from school, so i did something about it.

bed. soon. yay!

wireless internet

i made a discovery today!

i went outside today to paint some psalms, i am on 11 now! moving at lightning fast speed folks! and i brought my ibook outside to listen to music while i worked, i looked at the airport signal, and for some reason i have a small, sketchy reception on my back porch, it's a bit more steady if i move to the firepit. it's not very stable, but still an interesting discovery, nonetheless!

i am still investigating which neighbor it's coming from, but that involves tromping through the woods with a laptop, i mean that is totally normal and all....

mike.beckham

*i have a friend named mike
*we went to high school together
*i went to prom with mike senior year
*he has been a counselor and a camper at summer's best two weeks (in boswell, PA- pretty much my backyard!)
*mike goes to Ohio University
*he is majoring in something like environmental law?
*he used to be a philosophy major
*he is now in germany
*he's going on a mission trip to the south of france with campus crusade this summer

i got a postcard from him in germany today and it made my day!
he did sign it in closing with a german word that i didn't know, i mean not like i know more than about 10 words in german, anyway...so i consulted my favourite german translator friend, and with her help, i deciphered that mike was merely wishing me a good day, and not some deep love- good to know, good to know!

chuckwagon

one of the things i crave the most after being at school for long spells are buffalo chicken and Chinese food, but especially buffalo chicken. one of my favourite places to get a great grilled buffalo chicken salad is a restaurant in somerset called chuckwagon. they are only open for lunch and have a big catering business. my mom and i go there like at least once a week, the waitress knows our orders by heart, i love it. (one of the cool things about small towns)
it is essential to note here that the wallpaper in this restaurant reminds me of a plaid that sarah dignal would wear, in skirt format.
my mom and i parked on the street at a meter, and as my mom was looking for change for the meter, i heard some water gushing from somewhere, i looked around, and under the car, and at that moment, my mom spotted this yellow green liquid pouring out of our car.
700 dollars later the jeep is fixed, and almost back in our loving arms, tomarrow (heart you susan!) i think it comes back with new hoses and junk.

p.s. what makes the buffalo chicken salad so good is the thing that pretty much makes the salad not healthy....in southern PA they put fries on salads! apparely it's not a whole state of PA thing, because Jon looked at me wierd when i asked him if they do it up north, he said "that must be a pittsburgh thing...."

rummage sale

the other day i was helping mom take some things over to a church for a rummage sale. we had several shopping bags of clothes, and a few odds and ends. some of these things had been recently been bagged, others had been in bags for a few months waiting to be taken. some things were just in the basement and we took them...enter a pair of hiking booots...well we were at the church unpaking the things and taking them in. i grabbed the pair of boots. i looked in them, not suspecting anything, and what do i see, but a few small black things...resembling mouse poop! i look further into the boot and sure enough, there is a dead mouse in the toe of the boot! totally scared, i panic and tell my mom, she freaks out too, and there was a guy there who calmly took the boot and banged it on the side of the dumpster and the body fell out, my mom and i are freaking out like two schoolgirls and he hands the boot to us, we say thanks and says "no problem, i'm a hunter"

we weren't sure what to do with the boots after that...rumor has it they sold in the rummage sale- gross....just gross.

i prefer the ceramic type, alot less bothersome

the benefits of the sale

i got a really excellent book at the rummage sale:
THE YUPPIE GUIDE
(a state of the art guide for the Young Urban Professional)

can i just tell you what makes this guide so excellent is that it is similar to the metrosexual guide, but written in the 80's...it's amazing...

don't tell jon, but it might be given to him at a later date in time

days of an iwu graduate

i promise the events that have transpired over the past two days have in no way been normal

Monday morning- my mother informs me that we will be going dancing that evening at a local fire hall. now for those of you that don't know what a fire hall is used for, or wonder why dancing takes place at one, i can't really tell you. i have come to realize that most small towns in PA (and there are alot) use them for various community events, yep, fire halls and v.f.w posts (that's tomorrow night)are are a sure shot for a hoppin social time.
apparently this lady really likes dancing and wanted to teach who ever would come for free. well, my church got wind of this gala and now have monday night dinners, followed by dancing. my dad was out of town, and my brother has friends so i dancied with my mom. i know i was bad. my mom said i did pretty well considering i was learning the girl part and then flipped it so i was dancing the guy part. i kept tellimg my mom "i'm the man in this relationship!" it's okay, i know im not a good dancer. john wesley's happy about that one. oh yes, i also danced with my minister... and his son, seth, who is one of my favourite kids in the whole world. all in all it wasn't too bad, but i'm pretty sure i have plans next monday, like deep conditioning my hair or something....

Tuesday- ....a few weeks beofre school was out, britton asked me if i would like to go to a concert with him in Chaleroi, PA to see some non-descript punk bands, i said yes.

well over the course of those weeks some other kids jumped on the bandwagon and decided to come to this show. mark, another hilarious kid, andy, and lindsey (andy's girlfriend). we go, pick britt up from work, he drives us down to the venue. which is oviously at a v.f.w. post...where all the cool things happen. somehow it slipped my mind to wear a black shirt, i tried to blame it on the fact i was still unpacking, but britt and i both knew it was really because i don't have any....four bands played, i can't begin to tell you- they were the most mismatched bands, all in all not too bad, honestly.
britt asked me if i wanted to go back and look at the merchandise tables with him, i told him i didn't have any money, but said sure.
he asked me if there was anything i wanted, to which i reliped "yes! a nice coffee shop, a latte, and some mello acoustic guitar...."
